Can your PC handle numbers with 27 zeros on the end (1 octillion) - don't worry, they've just knocked off 12 zeros (trillion)

I feel for the poor Zimbabweans who have had to deal with numerous currency changes over the past few months. The latest is the removal of more zeros - this time 12 zeros.
See below for a table showing the names of these large numbers eg: Quadrillion = 1 with 15 zeros and Quintillion = 1 with 18 zeros.
Dealers in Zimbabwe had to carry around tables like this to understand what the figures mean!

Here's a report by Martin Fletcher in Harare (published by The Times (UK), on 3 February 2009):

Nothing to lose: how Mugabe’s banker turned Z$1,000,000,000,000 into Z$1

Gideon Gono, widely regarded as the world’s most disastrous central banker, knocked another 12 zeros off the Zimbabwean dollar yesterday in an attempt to bring the national currency back from the realms of the fantastical. In a stroke, the governor of Zimbabwe’s Reserve Bank slashed the street value of the Zimbabwean dollar from $250 trillion to one US dollar to 250, because the computers, calculators and people could no longer cope with all the zeros. To counter an inflation rate that economists now estimate to be 5,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (five sextillion) per cent, Mr Gono has now struck 25 zeros from the plunging national currency since August 2006. One American dollar would now buy Z$2,500,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000 (2.5 octillion) had he not done so.

Mr Gono’s announcement came just weeks after the introduction of a Z$100 trillion note, the latest and biggest of 35 denominations that he has brought in since January last year but only enough yesterday to buy half a loaf. "The zeros are too many for our machines to handle," said Obert Sibanda, the chairman of the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce. Mr Gono is now ordering Zimbabwe’s red-hot printing presses to produce seven entirely new bank notes ranging from Z$1 to Z$500. Economists poured scorn on Mr Gono’s announcement, pointing out that four months after he knocked ten noughts off last year they had all returned. One Western diplomat suggested that the governor’s reputation would be buried at "Zeros Acre" – a play on Heroes’ Acre, the name of the national monument to Zimbabwe’s independence leaders.

Tony Hawkins, a University of Zimbabwe economist who taught Mr Gono 20 years ago, observed that the governor was not the student of whom he was most proud. "He was a good student but forgot whatever economics he learnt when he became a political player." Mr Gono is not a man plagued by self-doubt, however. In an interview published in Newsweek magazine yesterday he said that he printed money simply so the Zimbabwean people could survive but the rest of the world was now following his example because of the credit crunch. "I had to print money," he said. "I found myself doing extraordinary things that aren’t in the textbooks. Then the IMF asked the US to please print money. The whole world is now practising what they have been saying I should not. I decided that God had been on my side and had come to vindicate me."

Mr Gono, 49, recently published an autobiography – sold only in US dollars, in violation of his own currency regulations – in which he claimed that President Bush had offered him the post of senior vice-president at the World Bank last July. Economists said that knocking off 12 more zeros would make not the slightest difference because hyper-inflation would render the new denominations equally worthless within weeks. The demise of the Zimbabwean dollar will also be hastened because last week the Government sanctioned the use of the US dollar, the British pound, the South African rand, the Euro and the Botswana Pula as legal tender. In effect, Zimbabwe now has two parallel economies, one using foreign exchange and the other using the increasingly irrelevant national currency. This is exacerbating the problems facing Mr Mugabe’s faltering regime because his security forces and the civil service are paid in Zimbabwean dollars. Soldiers have rioted on the streets of Harare, and most of the public sector – teachers, doctors, nurses, municipal workers – are on strike, demanding to be paid in foreign currency.

Morgan Tsvangirai, the leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, is trying to make Mr Gono’s removal a condition for his party joining a unity government next week. Mr Gono’s record is also coming under fire from within his own Zanu PF party. But asked by Newsweek if he considered his governorship a success, Mr Gono replied: "I am modestly credited with the survival strategy of my country. No other [central bank] governor has had to deal with the kind of inflation levels that I deal with. [The people at] my bank [are] at the cutting edge of the country." He added: "What keeps me bright and looking forward to every day is that it can’t be any worse."

Zimbabwe inflation hits 355,000%, so is there a crisis now??!!!

The Zimbabwe Independent and ZWnews has reported (15May2008) that inflation has now hit 355,000% - no wonder Zimbabweans are pouring out of the country and into Soweto, Jhb city centre, Cape Town, South Africa!
That 23 trillion ZW$ meal was a bargain the other day!
So, comparing inflation rates (using my inflation calculator):

165,000 % per annum
13,750 % per month
3,056 % per week
458 % per day

355,000 % per annum
29,583 % per month
6,574 % per week
986 % per day

1,700,000 % per annum
141,667 % per month
31,481 % per week
4,722 % per day

and last month's R7 loaf of bread will now cost R2,078!!!.... but if inflation had remained @ 165,000% it would have been a bargain @ R97

And "some people" say that there's no crisis in Zimbabwe! - well that "no-crisis" is now "coming home to roost"!

From the article: "The central bank introduced the $500 million bearer cheques for the public and the $5 billion, $25 billion, $50 billion agro-cheques for farmers. The new notes come hardly two weeks after the introduction of the $250 million bearer cheques.

Update on Wed21May2008: Oh no.. .can you believe that this can actually get worse - now it's up to 1,000,000%.

Zimbabwe inflation hits 165,000%, so how much will something cost in a week, month, year?

CapeTalk and BBC reported this am that Zimbabwe's inflation has hit 165,000%, and I was wondering what this would mean if I was suddenly put into a financial environment suffering with that kind of burden! Taking a loaf of bread as an example, say it cost R7.00 then what would it cost next year, next month, next week, next quarter, tomorrow? {Assuming a linear inflation rate increase!}
I have created an inflation calculator to see the figures on paper! And yes, it's very, very, very scary!

Now Tomorrow Next week Next month Next quarter Next year
7 39 221 970 3,857 11,557

Click here: for my Inflation Calculator and see how other prices will increase...

I don't think the new ZW$10 million will help nor last long! {see BBC for a photo of a handful of ZW$s}

How to use technology to say your thing to Robert Mugabe

I naively searched for a site that gave live election results from Zimbabwe's 2008 elections and of course came up empty handed.
I bumped into results from the last elections, then looked at some major news networks' web sites - but after a long while decided that this search was not going to bear fruits.
At the time of writing the results are slow in coming, but the MDC have won Bulawayo and Harare and the other results are neck and neck (MDC, Zanu PF).

Then I decided to use my blog to allow people to send their wishes to Robert Mugabe.

So, please feel free to add comments to:
*) lay your feelings out for Mr. Mugabe
*) update the election results
*) good wishes
*) bad wishes

Hopefully, the Zanu PF's "cock" is about to crow for the last time, and that the clever old man doesn't manage to cook another result!

I read somewhere that the mood in Zim was one of "change" pending - let's hope that is correct! Hopefully, one day we can all support the Zim people and spend some of our foreign currency on a holiday at Lake Kariba or Vic Falls or .....!

I fear that technology can't help here - let's just pray.......for Zimbabweans in Zim

On reading this email (pasted below) and many more stories from ZWnews: www.zwnews.com I felt so heartsore! The least I could do would be to assist in spreading the word. I took particular note of the paragraph stating: "it's genocide in the making and if you do not believe me, read the Genocide Report by Amnesty International which says we are IN level seven (level 8 is after it's happened and everyone is in denial)"

Letter from Zimbabwe sent in by John Winter

I reckon that these are the last days of TKM and ZPF. The darkest hour is always before dawn.

We are all terrified at what they are going to destroy next........I mean they are actually ploughing down brick and mortar houses and one white family with twin boys of 10 had no chance of salvaging anything when 100 riot police came in with AK47's and bulldozers and demolished their beautiful house - 5 bedrooms and pine ceilings - because it was "too close to the airport", so we are feeling extremely insecure right now. You know - I am aware that this does not help you sleep at night, but if you do not know - how can you help?

Even if you put us in your own mental ring of light and send your guardian angels to be with us - that is a help - but I feel so cut off from you all knowing I cannot tell you what's going on here simply because you will feel uncomfortable. There is no ways we can leave so that is not an option. I just ask that you all pray for us in the way that you know how, and let me know that you are thinking of us and sending out positive vibes... that's all. You can't just be in denial and pretend it’s not going on. To be frank with you, its genocide in the making and if you do not believe me, read the Genocide Report by Amnesty International which says we are IN level seven (level 8 is after it's happened and everyone is in denial). If you don't want me to tell you these things then it means you have not dealt with your own fear, but it does not help me to think you are turning your back on our situation.

We need you to get the news OUT that we are all in a fearfully dangerous situation here. Too many people turn their backs and say - oh well, that's what happens in Africa. This government has GONE MAD and you need to publicize our plight or how can we be rescued? You can't just say "oh you attract your own reality". The petrol queues are a reality, the pall of smoke all around our city is a reality, the thousands of homeless people sleeping outside in 0 Celsius with no food water, shelter and bedding are a reality. Today a family approached me, brother of the gardener's wife with two small children. Their home was trashed and they will have to sleep outside. We already support 8 people and a child on this property and electricity is going up next month by 250% as is water. How can I take another family of 4 and yet how can I turn them away to sleep out in the open?

I am not asking you for money or a ticket out of here - I am asking you to FACE the fact that we are in deep and terrible danger and I want you to pass on our news and pictures and don't just press the delete button for God's sake. Help in the way that you know how. Face the reality of what is going on here and SEND OUT THE WORD. The more people that know about it, the more chance we have of United Nations coming to our aid.

Please stop ignoring and denying what's happening. Would you like to be protected from the truth and then if we are eliminated how would you feel? Surely you would say "if only we knew how bad it really was we could have helped in some way". I know we chose to stay here and so we deserve what's coming to us. For now, we ourselves have food, shelter, a little fuel and a bit of money for the next meal - but what is going to happen next? Will they start on our houses? All property is going to belong to the State now. I want to send out my Title Deeds to one of you because if they get a hold of those I can't fight for my rights. We no longer have SW radio which told us everything that was happening because the government jammed it out of existence - we don't have any reporters, and no one is allowed to photograph. If we had reporters here they would have an absolute field day. Even the pro government Herald has written that people are shocked, stunned, bewildered and blown mindless by the wanton destruction of everyone's homes which are supposed to be 'illegal' but which a huge percentage of them actually do have licenses for. Please - have some compassion and HELP by sending out the articles and personal reports so that something can be done.

"I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. What I can do, I should do. And what I should do, by the grace of God, I will do." - Edward Everett Hal
