How to get an iPad2 for R3,519 (= less 20%) using your Discovery Credit Card

The cost of the Apple iPad2 is around about R4,399 but if you have attained Diamond status and have been on Discovery’s Vitality program for 5 years or more then you can get cash back to the value of 20%.  So your iPad2 will cost you R3,519 instead of R4,399!  That’s a saving of R880 :)

OK, OK, so if you aren’t already at Diamond status then you can’t get the 20% off immediately :( :(  BUT, if you follow the steps in this article then at some point in the future you too can benefit from this scheme.
In fact, if you act now by getting the Discovery Credit Card and joining their Vitality program then your entry level status is ‘Blue’ which gets a 10% discount from partner stores (5% from Pick ‘n Pay) – please read the small print on how the discounts are calculated… also explained in another article and calculator.

See here for the official Discovery Card web page.

The partner stores for 2011 are: Altech AutoPage cellular, Altech Netstar, @Home, Reggies, ToysRus, BabiesRus, Cape Union Mart, Exclusive Books, Frasers, Look & Listen, Nando’s, Pick ‘n Pay, Tiger Wheel & Tyre (on Vitality Drive), Stuttafords, The Pro Shop, TotalSports, Apple iStore.

So, what do you need to do to get that 20% discount?
As a Vitality member, you can get up to 20% of the money you spend with your Visa DiscoveryCard at DiscoveryCard partner stores (and up to 10% at Pick n Pay) paid back into your DiscoveryCard every month.  Your maximum discountable spend at partner stores is limited to 30% of your total DiscoveryCard spend in that statement period, with your total cash back calculated on a limit of R10,000 spend at all DiscoveryCard partner stores.
See HTT’s calculator to assist in the calculations: http://handytechtips.blogspot.com/2009/01/heres-htts-latest-calculator-i-got-over.html

Steps to getting to the 20% cash back level:
1) Join Discovery Health or Discovery Life (or both)
2) Join the Discovery Vitality program at the same time: http://www.discovery.co.za/portal/loggedout-individual/how-to-join-vitality
3) Get a DiscoveryCard to start earning rewards (cash backs and miles to spend at the Vitality Mall).  You will start earning at the ‘Blue’ Vitality level.
4) Start filling in the forms on the Discovery web site and start earning Vitality points.  Follow more detailed instructions that can be found in the article: “It's easy to get to GOLD on Discovery Vitality”.  Once you are on Gold, then attain Gold for 3 consecutive years to get to Diamond level… and start earning those 20% discounts on all partner stores.  Remember, that 5 year clock doesn’t start ticking until you join the Vitality program!
5) Once you are at Diamond, then mozy over to the www.myistore.co.za web page and locate your nearest store – call them and reserve your iPad2, then go there and use your Discovery Credit Card to pay for it.

(Whisper): Seeing as you managed read to this point, here’s a tip: If the steps 1 thru 5 above are too much for you, then why not find a friend that has already attained Diamond level and convince them to make the purchase for you!

Note: I am in no way employed nor paid by Discovery to write these articles – I am a client of Discovery Health, Life and I have a Discovery Credit Card.  I have Diamond status in the Vitality program.  I am currently investigating the VitalityDrive short term insurance product.

Discounted airtime for your cell phone – where’s the best price?

It’s been a while since I updated my “Buying Airtime Calculator” calculator (Feb 2009), so I decided to do another Bing search (anyone noticed that I’m avoiding Google?).  Truth-be-told, I was spurred to update the calculator after I saw a Tweet from @HifiCorp: “Now you can talk for more while paying less with our discount prepaid airtime offers! http://bit.ly/l2Q3Zz”.  The link takes you to a very large pdf file – I’ve snipped the great pricing: image

Or in tabular form from the calculator here:

Download the updated calculator which also lists the outlets that I could find here:  http://www.mediafire.com/file/l6bq6ioa44wwl7q/BuyingAirtimeCalculatorJune2011.xls

Anyone notice that they don’t list the new provider 8ta?  Do they even sell 8ta airtime?

That’s not just a question “out of the blue”… I’m getting suspicious about why GoogleAdsense suspended my account almost immediately after I posted this article on 8ta’s “special”: ‘I knew there had to be a catch with that 8ta deal for a Blackberry for R90 per month.... with free calls to a landline number’.
8ta was an advertiser on my blog – in fact the questions that I received were from readers asking about “my ad” on “my blog site”.
Since Google Adsense will not tell me the reason(s) for the suspension I will continue to speculate – and believe that this is the reason.

Blackberry Desktop Manager Sync Error 0x80040fb3 [Solved!]

If you are pulling your hair out trying to get your Outlook calendar to sync to your Blackberry calendar then perhaps this will help you sort it out.

Here’s the problem that I was having with my Blackberry Bold 9700 (OS6) sync using Blackberry Desktop Manager (BDM) version 6.1.0.35:

An error popped up “Conflict Resolution - Calendar”:
image   then:   image
No matter which option I selected, it resulted in this 0x80040fb3 error message:
image

The following forum helped with lots of options to try – but none helped.
I decided to play with the mappings and I noticed that the conflicts always failed when the “Attendees” field was listed… image

So I tried UNmapping that field:
Organiser->Configure settings->Advanced->Map Fields->then UNmap the ‘Attendees’ field as shown in the screen shots below:
image   image image

Retry the sync process and it worked! :) :)

If this doesn’t work for you then perhaps this info from the Blackberry Forums will:
http://www.blackberryforums.com/rim-software/137009-help-dm-sync-error-0x80040fb3.html

For more info – when the sync was failing the following appeared in the log file (not that it helped me much!):
The log file: "c:\Users\{YourName}\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Intellisync\{YourBB_PIN}\RIM.Log" contained the following info and error:

I knew there had to be a catch with that 8ta deal for a Blackberry for R90 per month.... with free calls to a landline number

I received a couple of calls asking me if this was a great deal for a Blackberry 8520.  Over the phone it seemed to be a brilliant deal (especially how it was read to me over the phone): it included a free phone, and BIS, for only R90 per month, and (as it was read to me) free calls to any landline number. plus had 500MB free YouTube streaming per month!

So, I had to investigate…

Here’s the ad:
image
Here’s the small print – with catches highlighted in red:

Blackberry 8520 @R90 for the first 3 months; includes free BIS subscription worth R49.
Thereafter R139 x21 months.

· 500MB Free YouTube streaming
· Call one Telkom landline number for FREE
· Send five SMSs per day and receive 50 FREE to send for that day
· 90 FREE minutes 8ta to 8ta / national landlines
· 15 FREE 8ta minutes to other local SA networks
· 25MB FREE data
· Free SIM & connection

So, don’t be fooled: it doesn’t offer free calls to all landlines – only to one nominated landline.
It’s R90 for the first 3 months – the remaining 21 months are charged at R139.

I recently purchased great contract deal from Vodacom’s RED specials on TopUp 135 for R135 per month:
(Unfortunately, it’s no longer available from the Vodacom Direct web site).

Things to watch out for that make it great:
Free phone, Free SIM, Free connection, Free delivery, 2 year warranty on phone, includes R135 free any time minutes (note: that it’s any time minutes, and not off peak minutes), the unused minutes roll over for up to 5 months (so you don’t lose the unused minutes).
So, for R135 per month, you got R135 airtime and a free phone!
These are per minute rates and they are cheaper than the Vodago rates.

The deal details (no longer available):

Blackberry 8520 RED including BIS FREE at R129 per month when signing an initial 24 month contract on Top up 135 (per minute billing only).

FREE SIM, FREE CONNECTION AND FREE DELIVERY.

This offer includes a 2 year handset warranty and for your own peace of mind, should you not be satisfied with your purchase you can return it within 14 days from delivery.

Phone features:
Dedicated Multimedia keys
Full QWERTY keyboard
2 megapixel camera
BlackBerry® Media Sync and Wi-Fi
