WhatsApp for Nokia Symbian phones is now available

Yes, the always-on chat app “WhatsApp Messenger” has just been (beta) released for Nokia phones (14 July 2010).  You can use it to chat (as in type messages, like Skype or GTalk) to other friends that have also installed it on their phones.  The program has had a great uptake from iPhone and Blackberry phone users… and now Nokia users can do the same.
So, as long as you have the program installed on your phone you will be able to chat to others – just create a contact using their cell phone number.  This means no more SMSs locally and internationally.  All this for free – well, almost – WhatsApp costs $1.99 per year – BUT, this beta version is free for 90 days.

Nokia phone requirements: Nokia S60 3rd or 5th edition Smartphone (those are phones that run Symbian operating system; N73 or newer phones) – if you don’t know what Symbian is, then your phone probably isn’t compatible.
See here for a list of Nokia cell phones and their Symbian versions: http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/s60history.htm

Download the .sis file to your PC from here [796KB]: WhatsApp for Nokia phones then use Nokia’s PC Suite to install it onto your phone… else navigate to this URL using your phone’s browser: http://www.whatsapp.com/nokia/WhatsApp_2_0_0.sis.  Here’s their download page for more info.

It takes a while when installing... since it checks all your contacts cell numbers and checks if your contacts are already using WhatsApp... then you can connect with them.

I must warn you though that it keeps the Internet connection on your phone open all the time... but it doesn't send/receive data all the time... only once every 3 or so minutes (unless you are busy in a chat “conversation”).
The beauty about this is that people can send you messages even when the program isn’t open – they appear like an SMS since the open Internet connection checks for messages every 3 or so minutes.  I have tested it and my battery life isn’t adversely affected.

Once it’s installed, it will ask you for your cell number so that others can find you by using your cell number.  No need to login or anything, it knows who you are.

Remember, it doesn’t connect to the Blackberry BB messenger service – BB users will also need to install the WhatsApp program and subscribe to the service, then use it to chat to their iPhone and Nokia friends.

Will it work on my wife’s phone? Well, to see if it’s compatible do a Google search with the phone’s model number eg: “Nokia E66” +specification
Pick one of the results and then search for “Symbian” in the page – if there’s a line like this: “Symbian OS 9.2, Series 60 v3.1 UI” then it IS compatible.  You need to look for “Series 60” v3 or v5.

What does it cost to send messages: It’s cheap… charged at data rates.  In South Africa, the unbundled data rates is about R2.00 per MB.  That’s 200c per million characters, which is 1c per 500 characters!  So, it’s as close to free as can be!
You gotta be dumb to continue using SMSs are say R1 per local SMS for only 180 characters! (and R2 for international SMSs)

Currently Nokia users can only send text - transfer of images is only available to iPhone and Blackberry users – iPhone can also transfer audio and location.

Remember to change your status (using the Options menu) to "Available" - it looks more tech savvy than "Hey there! I'm using WhatsApp!"

“Always-on” means that there is always a “service” running on the phone – even when you’ve exited the messaging interface.  This service periodically checks the WhatsApp server for any messages for you  -if it finds one when the messaging interface is exited, then it pops up a notification on your phone like an incoming SMS.  Open up the “SMS” and it will open the WhatsApp messaging interface – all ready to read and reply.

I’ve always wondered why MXit and NimBuzz never really took off compared to Blackberry messenger (and probably now WhatsApp) – I think it’s the ‘Always on’ feature…

BTW: to all my loyal readers that have read the whole article: when I installed the beta version it said that it was licensed until July 2011 – whooppeeee 1 year free license for using the beta version.  Let me know if you also got a year.

Update on 28July2010: WhatsApp has been updated: version 2.0.0 has been updated to 2.0.6. Download from here: http://www.whatsapp.com/nokia/

Update on 01Sept2010: WhatsApp for Android beta is now available - use your Android browser to download from here: http://www.whatsapp.com/android/
Minimum requirements: Android OS 2.2 or above, Unlimited internet data plan

  2. Brilliant app - but CRAP on Nokia! Doesn't allow to send messages to friends apart from myself (ERRR, WHY WOULD I SEND MESSAGES TO MYSELF?!) A friend had it on her iphone 3months now, when I downloaded it her number shows up in contacts but I can't message her. I used to be a BB freak but the hype there is dead...I'm a diehard Nokia fan but for me to stick with the Nok they're gonna have to develop this a LOT better. Also, unable to invite any friends as it always says the contact number is invalid (but then how have I been able to CALL these numbers for the past 1yr+ without any issue).

Overall, quite disappointed after having waited so long.....

  3. Hi Anonymous

I have a Nokia 6110 Navigator and so far I'm pretty impressed by the WhatsApp implementation.

Some things, I think could be better like:
    1) an option to turn off the connection to the Internet completely - ie: Go off line
    2) Sending files and pictures.

After I installed the app it found my most important contacts and I can now chat with them.

I haven't tried adding new people from my address book yet.

Perhaps your can try and uninstall WhatsApp and then ReInstall it again?

Let us know if that helps - please!

Thanks for commenting on your experiences ;)

  4. I have already installed WhatsApp in my E71, but every time I open the application, it keeps saying that the version I installed is already expired! But it isn't! I keep installing it all over again but it really won't let me open the app. :-(

  11. Hi Anonymous (with Nokia 5233)

Try setting your network mode to GSM (not WiFi)

If it doesn't work, then try initializing again - maybe the WhatsApp server was busy

    Good luck ;)

  12. Hi Romz

Try deleting the "non-important" names from your phone's contacts list. They should then disappear from the WhatsApp favs section.

    Hope that helps?

  13. Hi UpTownGal

The license is free for 1 year, but the actual WhatsApp program is beta so it expires after 90 days... But don't worry you can just download the next version from the WhatsApp web site

    Hope that helps?

  15. Hi Anonymous

Sounds like your network connection is blocked - check with your service provider. If you're on PrePaid then maybe you have run out of airtime?

I would call your network provider to check if your account is in good standing, if all else fails then UNinstall WhatsApp.

Good luck and keep us posted on the outcome please

  17. how can i stop it from connecting to internit on nokia e66

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hi Anonymous (with E66)

Ummm, I initially had the same question as I was worried about the cost of being on line "all" the time, and didn't want to drain my battery... BUT being online is the beauty of using WhatsApp! The fact that messages are delivered almost immediately like an SMS is what this is all about. So, don't worry about the small cost of the app polling the server every 3 minutes or so - the cost is soooo minimal. You will save after the 1st SMS is replaced by a WhatsApp msg.
Regarding battery life, well yes - you will need to charge your phone each night. I do that gladly.
But, to answer your question: "How can I stop it from connecting to internet", well, unfortunately, there's no setting to take it offline temporarliy, so you are going to have to UNinstall it.
    Note: each time you install WhatsApp it analyses your contacts list for other WhatsApp users so that you can chat to them... And I suspect the data transfer for this process is larger than just leaving it connected for a month or so. {I could be way wrong with that statement... Looking forward to being corrected by one of you}

  34. Hi Anonymous

Open WhatsApp, then go to the 'Contacts' page, then go to a contact that you want to invite, then select 'Contact Info', then 'Options' then 'Invite via SMS'.

This will send them an SMS with a link to the WhatsApp web page.

Hopefully it will be the last SMS that you sendd to that contact ;)

  35. Hi, I have just installed WhatsApp on my E72 and I really don't like the fact that eventhough I close the application, it keeps connecting to Internet and doesn't allow me to do it manually. I don't like the idea of not being able to handle my own applications and decide when I want to connect to Internet and manage my charges. My question is, is there a way to avoid WhatsApp keeps connecting to Internet even when it is closed?

If I go out to another place will it be disconnected?
And if I get back home, will it connect itself again?

  37. @arshaddddd: I don't have a Nokia E63 to test with, but I'm assuming you are correct - the phone will use WiFi if it can, then when you are out of range, then it will use your mobile phone's data connection.

Try it out and let me know.

Therefore, I uninstalled it later on. However, i am seeking an icon next to my network bar connecting to Internet eventhough Whatsapp is uninstalled??? can some tell me why it is happening..???

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hi Anonymous (with E72)

Try restarting your phone... it should go away - if not, then try uninstalling again.

BUT, as mentioned above, the costs associated with the WhatsApp program are low (no, negligible) as compared to sending text (SMS) messages.
So, I would say ReInstall it again and give it a try for a week or so, then Uninstall if you still can't see the benefits.

Can you tell, I love WhatsApp?

    Regards

  57. HI i read this somewhere:
" hi i have a nokia 5230 and i struggled a lot before solving this problem. I simply go to settings==>connectivity==>destinations==> and then one by one depending on how many acces points you have on your phone, i choose any acces point then i press options and i go to advanced settings and then i change the network type from IPV4 To IPv6. since with ipv6 my phone can`t connect to the internet. so everytime i don`t use the internet i change my access points to Ipv6. i know it`s a bit long to always do that everytime you log on and off the internet but it`s just better than deleting this awesome application. P.S i tried this on the nokia 5230 only and it works for me i don`t know about the other phones"

And i've tried it with my nokia e5 and it works!! So happy now because it works just as an on/off button does in an iphone.

  58. I have a Nokia E63 and have just downloaded WhatsApp. I think it's great but wish it had an "off" setting because I'm not using the app all the time and notice that data transfer is happening pretty much all the time, and my battery is also taking strain. I have found one solution, particuarly for when you don't want to be disturbed at all such as in the middle of the night - with the Nokia E63 if you press the phone's power on/off switch briefly it brings up a list of options, i.e. silent, etc - one of those options is "offline" this effectively switches off your cellular network and WiFi phone connections - you can still use your phone for non-network/internet appications, i.e calendar, alarm clock, camera, music player, etc. you just can't make or receive calls while in "offline" mode - but it does switch off the "Always on". To switch your network back on you just select the "General" profile. This is not an ideal solution for anyone who needs to be in phone contact 24/7, but until they build in an "off" function for the app, this works for me and provides for worry-free sleep.

After I put my number in it says ‘sending sms to verify cell no' and in the background I can hear a sms coming through, but the loading bar stays on my screen and keeps on saying ‘sending sms to verify cell no'. I just leave it and after an hour it says failed and I have to go through the process again. It also takes money to send the verification message every time. The verification message says: “This message can be deleted. 92103”

  60. I've been using WhatsApp on my N86 8MP and since the beginning, it has always been working like charm.

After the installation, you'll be required to register your phone number and you should get an SMS saying it's successful.

Download the latest WhatsApp for Nokia version 2.6.8. There are a lot of improvements and updates in this version.

WhatsApp for Nokia is always ON!
(Of course, there's a workaround that enables you to completely turn off your WhatsApp by using Mobile Guard by NetQin).
I used to turn off my WhatsApp too when not used but now since it is already more efficient and does not drain my battery that fast anymore, I use WhatsApp 24/7 now.

So make sure you subscribe to a Data Plan or you are connected to WiFI all the time.

WhatsApp for Nokia v2.6.8 is already more efficient in terms of the battery usage as compared to the earlier versions. I notice a big improvement.

It also includes Group Chat now.

  76. Hi,

Is it true that WHATSAPP send a message to all your contacts to propose them to use this application ?

Also, what's the interest of this application ?

It seems that the only interesting thing is that it can contact anyone in your contacts list even if they don't have MSN, Gtalk, AIM, Yahoo messenger, or any other messenger ?

So how people will be contacted if they have no messenger and haven't installed Whatsapp ? Will they get an email or SMS ?

Because if they really need to install Whatsapp it's quite useless, they could rather install any ther messenger or use Gtalk that is core on eveyr android phone, right ?

    Please tell me more !

    Thanks.

  77. Hi Anonymous

No, it's not true - WhatsApp does *not* send a message to all your contacts to propose them to use this application...
    It works like this:
Once you install WhatsApp on your phone, it adds your number to their list of WhatsApp users... Then it compares the phone numbers that you have on your phone's contacts list with a list of other users that have also installed WhatsApp on their phones.
The numbers that match (ie: those that have installed WhatsApp), then appear in your phone's WhatsApp list of "Favs" (Favorites).

You are correct: "it can contact anyone in your contacts list even if they don't have MSN, Gtalk, AIM, Yahoo messenger, or any other messenger" - as long as they have also installed WhatsApp. That's a HUGE benefit - there are lots of people that have installed WhatsApp on their phones so there is a very large "community".

If your friends don't use WhatsApp, then send them an SMS to download and install the app.... that will be the last SMS that you send to that friend!

Correct, they could just continue using any other instant messaging app like GTalk.... but, WhatsApp has the benefit of being "always on" and "push technology" - so you don't need to remember to run the app. It's always running in the background ready to receive messages.

  80. What does "Last seen" Mean? Is it the last time that person sent a message?
    I´m confused.

    ReplyDelete
  81. @Anonymous re "Last seen":

From the WhatsApp FAQ page: http://www.whatsapp.com/faq/#g11
    "
This time simply indicates the state of the device network connection and not if the application is actively in use.
For example, on some operating system such as BlackBerry and Android, the phone will connect on its own if it has a new incoming message even if the phone is not in active use at the moment.
    "

So, I think this can be interpreted as when that person has last sent or when the phone last received a message (remember receiving doesn't mean that the person is at the phone and read it).

Once you install WhatsApp on your phone, it adds your number to the WhatsApp server's list of WhatsApp users...

The numbers that match (ie: those that have already installed WhatsApp), then appear in your phone's WhatsApp list of "Favs" (Favorites)... and you can send WhatsApp messages to them immediately.

If your friends don't use WhatsApp, then you need to send them an SMS (or email) to download and install the app.... that will be the last SMS that you send to that friend!

After your friends have received the SMS/email, then they need to install WhatsApp on their phone so that you can send WhatsApp messages to each other.

Good luck - let me know how it goes!

  95. @GatlinRaberts: to force a refresh of your "Favs":
    Go to the "Favs" tab,
(the step might not be needed if you have zero Favorites)
then type any letters until no Favorites are listed,

then a "*Refresh Favorites" item will appear,
    then highlight that item,
then press it to force the refresh.
Wait a few minutes (5 or 10 minutes depending on your contacts list size and data link's speed)
then your phone's contacts should be sync'd with the WhatsApp server and your Favs list should be updated.

Hope this helps - pls let us know

  102. hi!

is there any way to block auto-connect, or disabling the GPRS connection?

the problem, for those who like me, have a service that costs some money each day.
in my case, if i connect to the internet i'll pay 0,98€ per day.

in my city there are lots of wi-fi hotpoints, so if we could set whatsapp to connect only via wi-fi, it would be great.

or maybe some other app that locks an app. (i searched the web for something like that, but i couldn't find anything).

    thanks!

    1. Hi E62 user

If the install is giving you that error, then I think you need to upgrade or get another phone that complies to WhatsApp's minimum requirements. See here for a list of Nokia phones that are supported: http://www.whatsapp.com/nokia
From that page, I see that the only E-series phones that are supported are: Nokia E63, Nokia E66

When buying a Nokia phone you need to check which Symbian version it is running: S60 3rd edition, or S60 5th edition, or S40... go to that page and see if your phone's model is listed: http://www.whatsapp.com/nokia
      iPhone: http://www.whatsapp.com/iphone
      Blackberry: http://www.whatsapp.com/appworld
      Android: http://www.whatsapp.com/android

  105. Dear HTT,

I have a Nokia C6-00 and recently got the WhatsApp (beginning of February). I just got a 100MB plan for the month which I think it's enough for WhatsApp. Problem is that when I'm at home and using the Wi-Fi connection it works ok. When I get out of home and loose my Wi-FI connection it seems to not work properly. Is this a connection problem or something ? I have priorized the Wi-Fi connection and then only the Phone one. This means that when I don't get any wi-fi connection it will automatically connects to the phone one right ??? I tried to understand this crap but it's kinda difficult. HELP ME PLS because this is the only way I can talk to my boyfriend that is in Spain and sooner will be in Costa Rica...if I can't talk with him I will be CRAZYYY !!! thank you

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hi Anonymous (with boy friend in Spain)

You are correct, when you are out of WiFi range then your phone will try to connect to WhatsApp server (via the Internet) using your phone's data connection (GPRS or Edge or 3G).

If you cannot connect using the phone's data connection - then check that your phone's data connection is set up correctly by opening up the phone's Internet browser and try to connect to any site, say www.google.com
If you can successfully connect then you shouldn't be having any problems with WhatsApp.

I suspect that you won't be able to connect to the Internet - if I am correct, then your phone's data connection setup is not right. Call your cell phone's help desk and ask them for assistance in setting up your data connection.

      Let me know your progress.

      Regards

    1. Hi Anonymous (Sony Ericsson Zylo w20i)

I'm sorry, but your phone doesn't seem to be using the Symbian Operating System.
I looked at the phone's specifications here: http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_zylo-3268.php
and it seems like it's a Java phone: Java (MIDP 2.0)

So, you won't be able to use WhatsApp :(

When buying a new phone, be sure to check on the WhatsApp site for compatibility.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Rahul Nirbhawane(nokia n73)

Seems like the N73 is a "Nokia S60 3rd edition" phone - the specifications page here confirms it:
http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n73-1550.php - it lists the Operating System as "Symbian OS 9.1, S60 3rd edition"

BUT, the WhatsApp downloads page here doesn't list the N73: http://www.whatsapp.com/nokia

So, I would just try installing it from the downloads page and see what happens:
      http://www.whatsapp.com/nokia

Please reply to this comment with your results.

      Good luck

    2. Hi, I don't have a Nokia 5230 to try this on but here's a solution that you can try: http://www.nairaland.com/909809/how-stop-whatsapp-connecting-internet

Bear in mind that I think keeping WhatsApp online all the time is better since everyone can contact you when your phone is turned on. Breaking the connection makes it an "unreliable" messaging channel (eg: when you forget to connect) and your contacts will need to switch to other channels (eg: SMS text messages) to get through to you.

Anyway, let us know if that solution works for you.

BEWARE, you will lose all your information (photos, contacts, text messages, videos, apps, data, documents, everything) - so do a full backup first (of your phone and memory card).
